Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 16 November 2003 UNDERSTANDING PSORIASIS This morning I received the following letter from a client which provided an opportunity to describe my understanding and approach to the skin condition known as Psoriasis. The name of the client has been changed to protect her privacy but she certainly does describe the underlying personality type and situation which predispose folk to psoriasis. Dear Robert. My 8 yo daughter has been diagnosed with psoriasis condition about 6 months ago. (I also have this condition for years, mainly on my scalp). I am a very emotional person, and however I was trying to control my emotions, did not seems to be working properly. Would the same apply to my daughter? I seem not be able to avoid conflicts (over the home work, of course), and if we are talking about stress level, hers and mine could be better. What are the ways we could control it (with the natural means)? Could we do something to get rid of psoriasis completely? We both currently go to a homoeopath, and after 7 months I got better, while my daughter is not better yet after 3 months. What would you suggest in our case? Thanks for your help, Dear Sarah, Psoriasis has to be seen as anger expressed on the skin. The actual process is an inflammaion of the tiny nerve endings which reach the skin and these nerves in turn, overstimulate the mechanism of skin cell replacement. This causes a thickening of the skin producing extra layers which are forced to slough prematurely. All this is accompanied by itching and scaling and by the time it has settled in the scalp area it is virtually impossible to treat using external treatments alone. My herbal treatments address the nervous system, the underlying immune system and the emotionality involved as well as assisting the damaged skin to recover. My treatment program consists of internal and external treatments. The internal mixture containing the herbs; Hypericum, Euphorbia, Vervain, Comfrey, Equisetum, Maritime Pine and Buchu along with the Bach Flower Remedies; Holly, Chicory, Crab Apple, Honeysuckle and Impatiens. Externally the application of a small amount of Hypericum Oil is also useful and I mix in the same bach flowers into the oil as above. The oil may be added to a natural style of hair conditioner and applied like this or massaged into the skin lesions directly once per day. It is necessary to keep up the internal and exernal program for quite a few months after all symptoms have dissapeared as we need to break the bodily habit of reacting quite so dramatically on the outside. The internal energy which generates the Psoriasis response is a clear indication that you need to do something to better manage anger and frustration. It is self harming to your own skin obviously and also irresponsible to vent it all over others. Fighting with an 8 year old child over homework issues is clearly ridiculous, unhealthy and unhelpful and you need to take responsibility for healing yourself emotionally. Energetic healing and calming techniques like Reiki and Meditation are extraordinarily helpful in this regard.
